Want to see something that I saw recently that freaked me out?
Whilst doing my routine checks, I came across this bad boy. I confirmed that my NETGEAR ReadyNAS 316 6-Bay is at its end-of-life, https://www.netguardstore.com.au/Netgear-EOL.asp. I thought ahead to what potentials this could mean for the data that I have been collecting since 2008. Then I remembered how stubborn I am and how I won’t let a little End-of-life hiccup get in my way of functioning. I will most probably look back at this post and mention the foreshadowing for my future emotional decline when I lose said data.
For this post, I will be completing the process on a Mac, using the unix-based program Terminal.
Before you start, make sure that SSH is enabled on the device; NAS webpage GUI > System > Settings > SSH:
Next, we need to obtain the most recent version of Plex:
Plex webpage GUI > Update Symbol > Server Update Available > Download Now:
Alternatively, you can go to Settings > <Your Server> > Settings > General:
Click on Please install manually then save the file. Depending on the browser you’re using, what you ultimately want to get is the download file in the browser:
To access this, open the downloads page in your browser. For Chrome, this is Command + Shift + J:
Next, right-click on the download and select Copy Link Address:
Now that we have this link, I’m going to go to the NAS and download it on that device. So, I’m going to open up Terminal and make my way there:
I’m going to ssh into the device (on your end, enter the root username and the IP address of the device):
Enter your root username password and then you’ll be in:
I’ve navigated to a place where I store my .deb files so feel free to do the same on your end. As you can see from this screenshot, here is the last version I have installed:
Now I’m going to add the new version by entering wget <copied link from my web browser>:
This will start the download progress and keep you updated (with final results):
To install it, type in dpkg -i <plexmediaserver….deb> (the file that you just downloaded) and press enter. You’ll be prompted to enter your password:
It will automatically do its thing for you:
When it’s done, you can confirm that this newest version (in this case 1.40.2.8395) in the same place as where we downloaded the .deb file earlier; Settings > <Your server> > Settings > General:
How did you go with the update? Have you been able to do the same thing as other end-of-life products? Please link me to your stuff so that I can check it out and maintain my stubborn streak!
